Well, it obviously depends on the individual, but with the right attitude and a professional instructor from St. Kitts Watersports, it can literally happen in one day.
Our Passion for Kitesurfing
Kitesurfing has been one of my biggest passions ever since I got up on the board for the first time and as such I really love sharing it with others. Especially when I get those students that just take to it naturally and when I see them catching the fever as well…you can just tell when you change somebody’s life forever. A couple of days ago I had the pleasure to have a student just like that and it was a blast.
Kitesurfing lesson with a UMHS Medical student
Derek, a medical student that is currently living and studying in beautiful St. Kitts, contacted St.Kitts Watersports for kitesurfing lessons. Derek had been watching the Kitesurfers play in the Atlantic ocean just outside his window for a long. Wishing he could join them, he just knew he had to learn how to kitesurf in the Caribbean. While Derek’s parents were visiting him in St.Kitts, they too saw all the people kitesurfing. They realized Derek’s strong interest to learn how to kitesurf so they purchased a gift certificate for a 3-hour Kitesurfing lesson at St. Kitts Watersports.
It still took almost 3 months until semester break came around and Derek could finally schedule his lesson with me. He told me right away how excited he was to get on the water. As always, I started by asking him about other boardsports he had done in the past, as it usually gives me a good idea of how fast I can get the student on the board. Derek had done lots of wakeboarding and snowboarding, this boardsport experience helps a lot.
“I felt right away like this was going to be an exciting kitesurfing lesson.”
I began by showing Derek how to set the kite. We then went over all the safety rules and got started with kite control. He picked up on it very quickly and we got through the flying techniques in less than an hour. With still over an hour of time left we went onto board start. As expected, Derek got up very easily and immediately went for a short ride. When I got him down the beach I could tell right away that he got the kitesurfing fever. That first ride you get on the board is such an exhilarating and free feeling, it’s hard to describe.
I use Valium as a sleeping pill. I know there are other treatments used for this purpose, but this is how things are. It works fast but never nocks me out like typical sleeping pills. I fall asleep gradually. Taking 2mg Valium once in a while, I’m not worried about side effects or tolerance. I just don’t use it often enough, I guess.
We continued the lesson with more board starts which turned into longer and more controlled rides every time. By the end of the lesson, Derek had such confidence on the water. I told him he was ready to purchase his own gear and keep practicing on his own. He was so happy and thankful, he ensured me that he would immediately start looking for some equipment to purchase and that I would see him at turtle beach all the time now.
So as you can see it’s really possible to become part of this amazing sport in just 3 hours. The combination of having an excellent teacher from St. Kitts Watersports and the unbeatable conditions of St. Kitts make it possible.
